A new laser source for infrared chemical imaging: it is expected to help early diagnosis of cancer.

Sebastien Fevrier, a researcher at the XLIM Institute (the National Center for scientific research in France / Limoges University), and its research team have proved that the desktop fiber laser source can be used for infrared microscopy, which is comparable to even in some respects the experimental accuracy of a large synchronous radiator device, according to MAMS.
The synchronous radiator is an accelerator device, which can provide "powerful" infrared light, and it can be used to analyze microscale resolution biological histochemistry. This high-accuracy chemical imaging technology can diagnose early diseases such as cirrhosis and cancer. However, so far, too high cost of ownership and limited availability of synchrotron radiation have hindered the application of chemical imaging technology in hospitals.
Using compact laser source instead of synchronous radiator can release the potential of the technology and make it easier to use in hospital, and further speed up diagnosis and treatment.
The research team published the research findings in Optica magazine, which is a peer review international journal dedicated to the research of photon front edge.
The research was done by a number of units, including researchers from the XLIM Institute and Soleil of Saclay synchrotron radiation light source, and an engineer from Novae, a start-up founded by Limoges University researchers in 2013. The goal of Novae is industrial and research market, such as laser based biological imaging and material micro machining. The infrared laser has now become a part of Novae product mix.
